Schedule

Part 1: Wedding Foundations and Structure (Five Hour Session on Zoom)

This two-part course is the foundational course of the program and a prerequisite to the others. It is more than just the bare minimum, the 'basics' of weddings and celebrancy, however. Many wedding celebrants have been licensed with only scant instruction around weddings; some have been licensed without any instruction at all.

While books about wedding celebration are certainly helpful, there is nothing like actual teaching by an actual teacher. In this class, Deborah Vaughan guides participants through her text on wedding celebration.

You will come away with a deeper understanding of the wedding, its history, structure, traditions, and elements. Such knowledge allows you not only to celebrate a wedding, but to do so with the confidence of one who understands weddings in the fullness and richness of the marriage ceremony.

Part 2: Personalized Ceremony Creation

Prerequisite: Part 1 of the Practice of Professional Celebrancy Studies.

                       3 hours on Zoom

Students of art are often told, 'You have to learn the rules before you can break them." Having a thorough understanding of the concepts of perspective, color, layout, and more, students can then express themselves freely, even if they take liberties with the rules they have learned.

In Personalized Ceremony Creation, you will learn how to go beyond the time-honored wedding ceremony in the creation of unique ceremonies that not only include the themes and desires of the couple, but incorporates them in a way that retains the power and meaning of the wedding ceremony. In this way, couples can bring the whimsical elements they love into the ceremony without turning their wedding into a novelty.

Part 3: Personal Leadership

Prerequisite: Part 1 - the Practice of Professional Celebrancy Studies.

                        3 hour session on Zoom

When couples come to you to plan their wedding ceremony, they look to you for the expertise they lack. For new officiants, or those who have had minimal training, this can pose a problem. In Personal Leadership, you will learn the techniques that allow you to guide couples from first inquiry to presenting the newly married Mr. And Mrs. to their guests.

Handling problems, managing the situations – and people – that can slow the process, knowing where to direct couples' attention and how to deflect it from the details that can eat up valuable time to no benefit – these topics and more are part of Personal Leadership.

Part 4: Business Management

Prerequisite: Part 1 - the Practice of Professional Celebrancy Studies.

Make no mistake: you may have gotten your license from an online or actual church, but being a wedding celebrant is a career. True, you get to choose how many weddings you will perform and when, choosing whether to work at celebrancy part-time or full-time, but it is work.

Your wedding practice or ministry is a business, and you are a small business-owner or entrepreneur. As such, you'll be responsible for setting fees, creating and following a budget, practicing good customer service, communicating well, and keeping records for tax and business purposes.

This course will give you a good base from which to begin your wedding celebrancy business and offer marketing information to get your business off and running.

Practicum

Prerequisite: all four parts of the Practice of Professional Celebrancy Program.

Practicum. Education students take a semester of student teaching before they graduate; physicians and other professions complete an internship.

Distance makes it impossible to offer a full internship, so we have designed a short, optional practicum in which you will hone your skills to achieve certification as a Master Celebrant.

During your completely individualized practicum, you will be guided through the creation of your own unique wedding ceremony and one or more elements. You will also be guided through a modified case study of a wedding which you will submit and a follow-up submission for review.

Throughout the practicum, which will follow a flexible timeline that takes into account each student's particular schedule, you will receive the guidance you need to achieve mastery in the field of wedding celebrancy.
